These can all be reached in just a few minutes by car. But there is much more to discover in what is one of Sicily’s most historic regions. The island of Mozia, just 700m out into the lagoon after which this development is named, is home to the ancient Carthaginian city of Motya, founded almost three thousand years ago. Around this time the nearby mountaintop town of Erice, which overlooks modern Trapani, also began to reach prominence as a trading post.

The more contemporary economy of the region revolves around wine production, and some of the pre-eminent names in Italian oenoculture have cantinas which are open to the public for tours, including Donnafugata and Carlo Pelligrino.

Marsala is just a fifteen minute drive to the south, the Baroque old town home to some splendidly atmospheric piazzas and a beautiful indoor market. Trapani is just a short drive further away to the north, the beautiful city on a distinctive peninsula the gateway to the splendid Aegedian Islands.

The quiet but well-connected airport of Trapani-Birgi is jess than ten minutes by car from your front door – allowing you to travel to and from some of Europe’s major cities in just an hour or so longer than your flight time. You could make it from the runway to your front door in fifteen minutes.

In the immediate neighbourhood of the residence, on the main state road, you can find a few local shops including a bar, and the area around the saline is filled with numerous excellent restaurants – the local speciality, needless to say, being impeccable seafood. You will need to drive to a supermarket, but there are several to choose from within a five minute radius.
