Santa Flavia is a market town, on a peninsula on the western half of Sicily’s north coast. Appartamento Enza is literally just around the corner from the town hall, on a quiet sidestreet with little passing traffic. The town is big enough to offer everything you’ll need for day-to-day life, and lies just a few kilometres away from the larger town of Bagheria, which has a population of about 50,000 and amenities that include a shopping area, cinema and museums.

A hundred years ago, this area was the summer playground of Palermo’s rich and famous, and some noteworthy local architecture reflects this, including a number of magnificent villas to which the local nobility decamped with family, friends and staff. These days it is a less showy neighbourhood, with a strong community spirit and a distinct local identity. The town is linked to the sea by the lovely fishing community of Santa Flavia, reachable on foot if the day is not too hot.

Leisure attractions in the region are plentiful, with an obvious variety of beaches, coves and watersports including a thriving kite-surfing community. History lovers will adore the archaeological park at nearby Solunto, and the UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Palermo, Monreale and Cefalù. This last is a magnificent medieval beach town, and a perennial favourite of the tourists who arrive there every summer from all over the Italian mainland and far beyond.

Palermo was first settled by the Phoenicians, thousands of years ago, and few stretches of land anywhere in the world can have passed through the hands of as many empires and civilisations as this.

The local culinary tradition is also legendary, with everything from tempting street food to luxurious fine dining. And the local soil is legendarily fertile, producing both red and white wines of extremely high quality.
