Three Bedroom Holiday Home in Sicily’s Madonie Park

Casa Collosi is a spacious, practical and well-maintained property in the town of Pollina in northern Sicily. Just a few kilometres from the island’s beautiful coast, and surrounded by the greenery of the Madonie Natural Park, this is a beautiful corner of the island that attracts visitors from all over Europe and beyond, but retains an unmistakeably Sicilian way of life.

The House

Entering at street level, from a narrow cobbled road, the first thing that strikes you is that Casa Collosi is that it has been kept in rather more modern condition than many of its neighbours – this is no Sicilian ‘€1 house’ or complex renovation project. The polished floor is pink granite, the doors are modern and light and the shutters on the windows are efficient rollers rather than the traditional hinged wooden models.

On your left is a bathroom which needs some work, but everything else in this property is ready to use, suitable for immediate occupation. A well-lit corridor passes a guest bedroom on the right hand side and a staircase with modern bannister on the other, before opening into a large kitchen-diner of 20m2. With windows on two sides and crisp, white walls this is a lovely focal point to the house.

The granite flooring continues up the stairs, which lead to a landing. Off this is a bathroom with a shower, followed by a roomy master bedroom. At the end of the corridor, through a neat archway, is a second large bedroom and a study. There is also a little storage cupboard with a skylight.

Lastly, in a basement accessed by a sloping side street, there are a pair of ample storerooms.

The ceilings have been finished with light wooden panels, and the house has a slightly northern-European feel – practical and bright with clean lines and unobtrusive tiled floors. There is an intercom system for the front door and the pipes are in place to add heating if you wanted to make it a year-round home. Pollina is served by fibre-optic internet and Casa Collosi would make a perfect smart-working base.

Surroundings

The town of Pollina is a community of around a thousand people, with shops, public services and a beautiful open air theatre that hosts a fabulous festival of street theatre every summer against a truly spectacular natural backdrop.

The town is unmistakeably Sicilian, with conversation flying around from balcony to balcony, and groups of men and women gathering in groups in the little piazzas of the town, so comfortable in their routines that you half expect to see grooves worn in the stone benches when they stand up. The local greengrocer brings his small ‘bee’ wagon around the streets selling fresh fruit and vegetables right outside your door, and the chimes of the bell in the old church tower echo around the empty alleyways during the religiously-observed siesta hour.

You will find a burgeoning international community, though, as we have helped several happy clients, now friends, buy (and in some cases renovate) property in the town, either to relocate, or to fly south in winter and enjoy their new holiday home in Sicily. If it doesn’t sound too involved, we feel an almost parental pride when we hear of their regular meet-ups and the progress they are making with their new lives in Sicily.

Further afield, the Madonie Park is  natural paradise for the sporty, outdoors-y and food-y, with everything from paragliding in summer to ski slopes in winter. You could take a different walk or bike ride through this reserve every day for a year and still only scratch the surface of what it has to offer… and each of the little towns and villages nestled in its hills has their own culinary tradition to replenish those valuable energy reserves in style!

You will be a short drive from the famous sandy beach and UNESCO World Heritage Site of Cefalù, within a short drive of vibrant Palermo and  the imposing Mount Etna, and able to see the exotic Aeolian Islands from Pollina on a clear day.

Potential

Very little work would be required to make Casa Collosi into a lovely, family-sized holiday home in Sicily – we are really only talking about the downstairs bathroom. This lovely spot in the hills is ready and waiting for a buyer who wants to move quickly and with minimal fuss.
